Westcott’s Redesigned Softbox Series

Westcott has announced a redesigned version of its Rapid Box Switch Fold-Flat softboxes, with most of the changes focusing on making them easier to transport, store and set up, especially for photographers who regularly work on location. According to Westcott, the softboxes can be opened in around one second and folded back down just as quickly. Once collapsed, they have a fairly flat shape, so they should take up less space when packed alongside other equipment.
The new Rapid Box Switch Fold-Flat series includes 61cm, 91cm and 122cm octagonal softboxes, rectangular versions measuring approximately 61 × 91cm, 91 × 91cm and 91 × 122cm, and three strip softboxes in 30 × 91cm, 30 × 122cm and 30 × 183cm sizes. All nine models come with a Bowens Switch Insert, inner and outer diffusion panels, a 55-degree grid and a carrying case. The included grid is worth mentioning, since these are often sold separately and help control how much light spills onto the background or surrounding areas. Westcott also made some changes to the mounting system. The new design uses an all-metal insert that slides into a channel and locks into place, with a release mechanism for removing it when switching between different lights. The included Bowens insert works with several Westcott lights, including the FJ800, FJ400 series, FJ250 and L120-B, as well as other compatible Bowens-mount lights. Existing Switch Inserts are still supported, and additional versions are available separately for other strobes, speedlights and continuous lights.
When it comes to the actual light, not much has changed. The softboxes still use a reflective silver interior, which helps direct more light forward, while the two diffusion panels soften the light before it reaches your subject. Westcott also says the diffusion materials are designed to keep colours neutral, particularly when shooting skin tones or working with several lights at once. Prices for the new softboxes range from $110 to $160.
