Nikon’s Upcoming Z 120-300mm f/2.8 Lens

Nikon is apparently getting ready to announce its new Nikkor Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S, with the latest rumours suggesting an official unveiling on October 29. The company first announced that it was developing the lens back in May, and since then, pre-production versions have already been spotted at several major sporting events. One of the main features is the built-in 1.4x teleconverter, which extends the maximum focal length from 300mm to 420mm without having to attach a separate teleconverter. This gives you a 120-420mm zoom range, although using the teleconverter also reduces the maximum aperture to f/4.
According to the latest leaks, the new lens will weigh approximately 2.59kg, making it quite a bit lighter than its F-mount predecessor, the AF-S 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR, which weighs around 3.25kg. That is a difference of roughly 660g, which is pretty noticeable for a lens of this size. The expected weight is also almost identical to Canon’s RF 100-300mm f/2.8 L IS USM. However, what has probably caused the most discussion so far is the price. Earlier rumours suggested that the lens could cost more than Nikon’s Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, and more recent information now points to a possible price of around $18,000. If that turns out to be correct, it would become the most expensive lens in Nikon’s Z-mount lineup.
Nikon is also rumoured to be producing the lens in fairly small quantities, which could mean longer waiting times once it becomes available. And this might not be Nikon’s only announcement before the end of the year. The new Nikon Z70 is also expected to arrive in November, possibly featuring a 45-megapixel stacked APS-C sensor and a focus on high-speed photography.
