The Latest Canon Lens Patent

A couple of days ago, a new Canon patent for a 70-200mm f/2 zoom lens appeared, which, if it ever makes it into production, would be something we have not seen from the company before. The patent, published in Japan under the number JP 2026-168807, includes eleven different lens designs. Eight of them describe fast zoom lenses with apertures around f/1.46 and focal lengths between 36mm and 83mm. The most interesting one is the ninth design, which covers approximately 72-194mm with a constant f/2.06 aperture. In practice, that would essentially be a 70-200mm f/2, making it a full stop faster than the usual f/2.8 telephoto zooms.
Looking at the actual design, the proposed lens uses 23 elements arranged in eight groups and features internal zooming, meaning its physical length would stay the same when changing focal lengths. Three of the lens groups remain stationary, while the others move during zooming. Focusing is handled by three moving elements, which are intended to maintain consistent optical performance at different focusing distances. The front element measures 94mm in diameter, so this would certainly not be a particularly small lens. According to the patent, the optical design measures around 240mm from the front element to the sensor, which would put the lens itself at approximately 220mm or more in length. The patent also includes two slightly slower versions covering a similar focal length range, with maximum apertures of f/2.3 and f/2.5.
Of course, a patent does not mean Canon is actually planning to release this lens. Camera manufacturers regularly patent optical designs that never become real products. But if it ever comes out, the combination of a constant f/2 aperture and a 200mm maximum focal length would almost certainly make it a large, heavy and expensive piece of equipment. For reference, Canon’s older EF 200mm f/2L IS USM prime weighed more than 2.5kg, although that does not necessarily tell us how heavy a modern zoom would be. The patent also follows several other unusual Canon designs that have surfaced recently, including additional f/2 zooms and a telephoto zoom reaching 600mm. There is currently no confirmed release date or pricing, although sources estimates that a 70-200mm f/2 could cost somewhere between $6,000 and $8,000 if it ever reaches production.
