Godox’s New iM10 Mini Flash

Godox has announced the new iM10 Mini Flash, a small on-camera flash designed for people who occasionally need a little extra light without carrying a full-sized speedlight. Weighing 23 grams it is small enough to fit into a pocket and can be attached directly to a camera’s hot shoe. However, given its size, there are obviously some limitations. Godox does not actually specify the flash’s maximum output, but it offers four manual power settings, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and full power. Based on the company’s sample photos, it seems mainly intended for indoor photos, nighttime portraits and situations where you just want to add a little light to your subject. It is probably not going to be super useful when trying to overpower bright daylight.
One of the main differences compared to larger flashes is that the iM10 is completely manual. There is no TTL automatic exposure, and it does not communicate with the camera beyond receiving the signal to fire. Instead, it uses a single-contact hot shoe, which makes it compatible with a wide range of cameras, including many mirrorless cameras, compact digital cameras and even older film cameras. The flash also has a fixed head, meaning you cannot tilt or rotate it to bounce light off walls or ceilings. There is no wireless triggering or off-camera functionality either, so you are limited to pointing it directly at your subject and adjusting the power manually.
As for battery life, the iM10 comes with a built-in rechargeable battery that charges through USB-C. According to Godox, it can deliver approximately 350 full-power flashes per charge, with a recycling time of around three seconds. A full recharge takes a little over an hour. The Godox iM10 Mini Flash is priced at $24.90.
