Some new details about the upcoming Canon EOS R7 Mark II have surfaced, and it looks like Canon might be taking a slightly different approach to the camera’s sensor than previously expected. According to the latest information from insider sources, the R7 Mark II could become Canon’s first camera with a partially stacked sensor, rather than the fully stacked design that earlier rumours had suggested. A partially stacked sensor would still offer faster readout speeds than the sensor found in the current EOS R7, potentially reducing rolling shutter and improving performance when shooting fast-moving subjects. At the same time, it would be cheaper to manufacture than a fully stacked sensor, which Canon currently reserves for higher-end models such as the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II.

Another detail that seems to be becoming more consistent across recent rumours is the resolution. The EOS R7 Mark II is now expected to come with a 39-megapixel APS-C sensor, up from the 32.5 megapixels of the original R7. That would give you a little more room for cropping, which could be useful for wildlife and sports photography, where APS-C cameras are already quite popular. Beyond the sensor, the camera is also said to borrow some features from Canon’s other recent models, including an improved 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system, a pre-shooting function and continuous shooting at up to 40 frames per second using the electronic shutter. There are also suggestions that Canon is planning some improvements on the video side, although specific recording formats and resolutions have not been mentioned yet.

Interestingly, Canon might also be preparing one or two new RF-S lenses to launch around the same time as the R7 Mark II. There is currently no information about their focal lengths or specifications, but a dedicated super-telephoto zoom or a faster APS-C prime would certainly make sense for the system. Canon’s RF-S lineup is still relatively limited compared to some competing APS-C systems, particularly when it comes to more specialised lenses.
