Tamron’s 20-40mm f/2.8 Comes To Nikon Z-Mount

Tamron is bringing another one of its existing Sony lenses over to Nikon Z-mount, this time the 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD. The lens originally launched for Sony E-mount back in 2022, and the new Z-mount version keeps the same unusual combination of a 20mm ultra-wide starting point and constant f/2.8 aperture. It is also relatively compact for a full-frame f/2.8 zoom, weighing 380g and measuring 88.7mm long, with weather sealing and a 67mm filter thread.
Optically, the 20-40mm uses 12 elements in 11 groups, including four low-dispersion elements, two glass-molded aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element. Autofocus is handled by Tamron’s VXD linear motor, which should also make the lens useful for video where quieter focusing is important. At 20mm, it delivers a 94.5-degree angle of view and can focus down to 0.17m, giving a maximum magnification of 1:3.8. There is also a nine-blade aperture, while APS-C Nikon cameras turn the zoom into roughly a 30-60mm equivalent.
What makes the lens particularly interesting for Nikon Z users is that there really is not a direct equivalent in the system right now. Nikon’s 14-30mm f/4 S goes considerably wider but is a stop slower, while the small 24-50mm f/4-6.3 covers a somewhat similar range but gives up both the 20mm wide end and the constant f/2.8 aperture. So the Tamron sits somewhere in the middle ground being wider than a typical standard zoom but without becoming a dedicated ultra-wide lens. The Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD for Nikon Z will cost $729 and is scheduled to start shipping on October 22.
