Aftershoot’s New RAW Editor

Aftershoot, the company best known for its editing and culling software, has launched a free RAW editor called Photon. The software is meant for photographers who want to start working with RAW files but find traditional editors a bit overwhelming. Its main feature is an AI Coach, which looks at the photo, suggests possible adjustments and, importantly, explains why you might want to make them. So instead of simply applying an edit automatically, the idea is to help you understand what things like exposure, colour and other adjustments are actually doing.
There are still a lot of manual editing controls, and the AI Coach is completely optional. You can follow all of its suggestions, use a few of them or ignore it completely and edit everything yourself. Aftershoot has also built its own RAW processing engine from scratch, although it uses DCP profiles from Adobe’s DNG Converter for colour calibration. RAW and JPEG files are supported, with compatibility already covering many cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, OM System and Olympus, alongside the recent iPhones. Less common cameras may take longer to receive support, with Aftershoot saying future additions will largely depend on user demand.
And unlike many RAW editors, there is not a subscription hiding behind the initial download either. Photon is entirely free, does not require a credit card to try, and is available for both macOS and Windows.
