Just over a year after its major update, Nikon is following up with another firmware release for the Z6 III. This time, the focus is mainly on smaller refinements and bug fixes. Firmware version 2.01 brings a few improvements to existing features, including the ability to use Pre-Release Capture with Bluetooth remote controls. This means the camera can start buffering photos while you are holding the shutter button halfway down, even when using a remote, and then save those photos once you fully press it, which can be particularly useful for wildlife or action photography. Nikon has not mentioned exactly which Bluetooth remotes are supported, though.

The update also adds more lens support for the focus limiter, a feature introduced with firmware 2.0 that lets you restrict the distance range in which the camera searches for focus. Eight more Nikkor Z lenses now work with it, including the 14-24mm f/2.8 S, 14-30mm f/4 S, 24-70mm f/4 S, 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR and 24-50mm f/4-6.3, as well as three DX zooms, the 16-50mm, 18-140mm and 50-250mm. There are also a few smaller menu changes. For example, Cloud Picture Control is now called Imaging Recipe, and Nikon has updated the wording for downloading those recipes. A few numbering mistakes in the Custom Settings menu have been corrected as well.

The rest of the update mainly deals with bug fixes, especially for people using older F-mount lenses with an adapter. Nikon has fixed an issue where exposure could change unexpectedly during continuous shooting with E-type lenses, along with occasional camera freezes and autofocus problems when using FV lock. There is also a fix for rare overexposure when shooting bursts in manual mode. A couple of other problems have been addressed too, including Pixel Shift not always capturing the correct number of photos with non-CPU lenses and the camera occasionally freezing when zooming in or out of live view with manual-focus lenses. Firmware version 2.01 is available as a free download for the Nikon Z6 III and can be installed using a memory card through the camera’s setup menu.
