GoPro’s entire Mission 1 Series just received a new firmware update, with a particular focus on improving the cameras’ photography capabilities. The company says it has completely reworked the way the cameras capture photos, introducing a zero-lag shutter response that should make taking pictures feel much more immediate. There is also a new continuous shooting mode, allowing you to capture more than 100 consecutive photos at 12 megapixels or over 20 RAW photos at the full 50-megapixel resolution. A new on-screen buffer indicator shows when the camera is approaching its shooting limit, while the shutter sound has also been updated to provide clearer confirmation whenever a photo is captured.

Alongside the firmware improvements, GoPro is updating its Mission Monitor app with several new exposure and monitoring tools. These include a real-time histogram, waveform monitor, RGB parade and false colour, giving you more ways to check exposure and colour while shooting. Perhaps more importantly, the app now supports wireless connectivity with Mission 1 Series cameras, allowing for a cable-free live preview and monitoring setup. This should be very useful when the camera is mounted somewhere difficult to reach or when working with more complicated setups. GoPro is also positioning the updated cameras as much more capable everyday photography tools, particularly when paired with its Point-and-Shoot Grip.

There is also something new for filmmakers. Through the GoPro Labs beta program, the Mission 1 ILS now supports anamorphic lenses with squeeze ratios of 1.33x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x and 2.0x. The camera writes the appropriate pixel aspect ratio into the file metadata, allowing compatible editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve to automatically desqueeze the footage. An on-camera desqueeze preview is planned for a future update, although the feature remains in beta for now. The Mission 1 Series photography firmware update is free, while the updated Mission Monitor app is available for devices running iOS 18 or later. The anamorphic beta firmware is also available as a free download through GoPro Labs.
