Brightin Star’s New 50mm f/2 Tri-Sight Lens

Brightin Star’s new 50mm f/2 Tri-Sight has officially launched, after first appearing at CP+ earlier this year. The full-frame manual-focus lens is available for Sony E, Leica L, Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts, but what makes it special is a third control ring alongside the usual focus and aperture rings. This one is marked Smooth, Prime and Foams, and turning it actually moves a floating optical group inside the lens, changing the way your bokeh looks.
Each setting handles spherical aberration differently. Smooth deliberately under-corrects it, creating softer highlights and more diffuse background blur without simply making the subject itself soft. Prime is the conventional setting, giving the lens a more typical 50mm f/2 look with normal sharpness and bokeh. Foams goes in the opposite direction, overcorrecting spherical aberration to give out-of-focus highlights harder, ring-shaped edges. Brightin Star also includes rear-mounted creative bokeh inserts, with triangle, butterfly, clover and five-pointed star shapes that physically change the appearance of blurred highlights.
The optical design itself is relatively simple for a modern 50mm, using seven elements arranged in six groups. Depending on the camera mount, the lens weighs between 429 and 454g and measures around 70 to 74mm long. There is no autofocus here, so focusing is entirely manual. The Brightin Star 50mm f/2 Tri-Sight is available for Sony E, Leica L, Canon RF and Nikon Z full-frame cameras, with a retail price of $349.
