7Artisans is teasing a new lightweight lens, weighing in at 90 grams, with an official announcement scheduled for January 27. Based on what has been shared so far, most people speculate this to be the previously rumoured full-frame autofocus 40mm f/2.5 prime. Sony and Viltrox already offer lenses at this focal length and aperture, so it is a familiar spec on paper, but 7Artisans seems to be leaning more towards compactness. The company has confirmed the lens measures roughly 62mm in length and about 35mm in height, which puts it in pancake territory for a full-frame AF lens.

Beyond its size, details are still thin. No optical formula, mount list, or performance claims have been shared yet. What we do know is that it is expected to compete directly with the Viltrox 40mm f/2.5 AF, which has already found a niche as a small, everyday prime. The Viltrox lens measures about 68 × 55.9mm, so the 7Artisans option appears both shorter and narrower.

Design-wise, there is also a clear philosophical split. The Viltrox 40mm keeps things very minimal, offering just a focus ring. The teased 7Artisans lens, based on leaked product photos, includes a manual aperture ring, a physical AF/MF switch, and a dedicated focus ring, all packed into a smaller body. No word on pricing yet.
