The Latest Leica Rumours
There are quite a few Leica rumours floating around at the moment, giving us a better idea of what could be coming next from the company through the end of 2026 and into 2027. New cameras, different versions of existing models and several long-rumoured lenses are all being discussed, although some of these products have apparently been in development for years without actually arriving. Leica has not exactly been quiet in 2026 either, with the Noctilux-M 35mm f/1.2 ASPH. arriving in January, several Metal Grey products following in May, and the SL3-P, Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. and APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm f/2.8 launching in June.
On the camera side, the most talked-about possibility is an M11-R, which could arrive later this year or in early 2027. Interestingly, it is rumoured to keep the same 60MP resolution, with the new sensor potentially serving as an early version of technology that will eventually appear in the Leica M12, which is now expected sometime in 2027. A Q3 43 Monochrom is also planned for this autumn, essentially combining the 43mm APO lens from the Q3 43 with a monochrome sensor. Meanwhile, the status of Leica’s repeatedly rumoured mirrorless medium-format camera is much less clear, with reports earlier this year suggesting development may have been stopped altogether.
Then there are the lenses Leica users have been waiting on for considerably longer. For M-Mount, an updated APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 with a shorter minimum focusing distance has been discussed since 2025. The L-Mount list is much longer and includes a possible APO 135mm, 85mm f/1.4, 18-50mm, APO-Summicron-SL 24mm f/2 ASPH. and either a 28-105mm or 24-105mm f/4. The 135mm appears to be more than just an internet wishlist item, as Leica’s Head of Optics Peter Karbe discussed work on one back in 2025, while rumours around the 24mm go all the way back to 2021. For now, though, Leica has not given release dates for any of these lenses.
