Fujifilm XF 400mm Lens Confirmed?

Fujifilm’s long-rumoured XF 400mm telephoto lens now looks to be almost certain. According to multiple sources, the company is getting ready to unveil a new XF 400mm prime alongside the Fujifilm X-T6, giving X-mount photographers another high-end telephoto option.

Fujifilm has been expected to launch two new lenses with the X-T6 for quite some time. One is almost certainly the XF 50-140mm f/2.8 MK II, while the second was only known to be a telephoto prime. Now, presentation leaks have reportedly confirmed that it will indeed be a 400mm lens. If the rumours are correct, everything should become official during the first week of September, with September 3 currently looking like the most likely announcement date.

The biggest unknown is still the maximum aperture. So far, no one has been able to confirm whether Fujifilm is preparing an f/4 version or the even faster f/2.8 model. Interestingly, photographers have been asking for both for years. Back in 2018, a FujiRumors survey found that the two most requested wildlife lenses were an XF 400mm f/4 R LM OIS WR and an XF 400mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR. Either one would fill a big gap in the current X-mount lineup, although an f/4 version would likely be the more compact and practical option.
