7Artisans’ AF 40mm f/2.5 full-frame prime lens for Nikon Z and L-Mount is here, just after the lens was first launched for Sony E-mount a few months ago. The new versions are almost identical to the original, with only small design changes to accommodate the different mounts. Measuring around 40mm in length and weighing roughly 90g, it remains one of the smallest autofocus full-frame prime lenses available.

On the inside, the lens uses a 7-element, 6-group optical design paired with a 9-blade aperture. One of its more distinctive features is its bubble bokeh, producing the classic soap-bubble look in out-of-focus highlights instead of the smoother rendering many modern lenses go for. Whether that is a positive or not will come down to personal taste of course. Autofocus is handled by an STM motor, with support for Eye AF and subject tracking on compatible Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica cameras. The minimum focusing distance is 0.4m.

There are a few compatibility limitations to be aware of. According to 7Artisans, the lens does not work with the Sigma BF or Leica SL3-S, and compatibility with the Leica SL3-P has yet to be confirmed. As always, it is worth checking the official compatibility list before picking one up. The 7Artisans AF 40mm f/2.5 is available for Sony E, Nikon Z, and L-Mount cameras and is priced at $159.
