Sigma’s Upcoming 50-120mm f/2.8 Lens
Leaked product shot

Sigma has a new lens announcement planned for October 24 in Cologne, and there are now some pretty strong indications of what we could see at the event. The expected lens is the Sigma 50-120mm f/2.8 DC OS | Contemporary, a fast telephoto zoom designed for APS-C cameras. And shortly before the event, the first product photos and a fairly detailed set of specifications have now leaked, giving us a much better idea of what Sigma is preparing. On APS-C, the 50-120mm range works out to roughly 75-180mm in full-frame terms, putting it close to the territory of a traditional 70-200mm f/2.8.

According to the leaked specifications, the lens uses 18 elements arranged in 13 groups, with autofocus handled by Sigma’s HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor. There is also optical stabilisation rated for up to 6.5 stops at 50mm and 4.5 stops at 120mm. Minimum focusing distance is 23cm at the wide end and 55cm at the telephoto end, resulting in maximum reproduction ratios of 1:3 and 1:4.7 respectively. The Sony E-mount version reportedly weighs 390g and accepts relatively small 55mm filters.

The lens itself did not exactly come out of nowhere either. Sigma patents describing a 50-120mm f/2.8 design have been around since 2023, and the latest leaks suggest that design is finally turning into an actual product. Pricing and exact mount options have not surfaced yet, so there are still a few important details missing.
