The Latest Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark IV Rumours

It seems like the upcoming PowerShot G7 X Mark IV will be a much more interesting camera than Canon’s recent compact releases. Based on multiple sources, the camera is expected to arrive sometime between March and September. Most importantly, Canon may finally be listening to photographers again. The V1 left many people hanging thanks to its lack of an EVF, no built-in flash, and a body that felt much larger than it needed to be. The G7 X Mark IV however, is swinging back toward a more traditional, photography-focused design.

From a hardware standpoint, the biggest change is expected to be the sensor. The G7 X Mark IV is rumoured to use a larger 1.4-inch CMOS sensor with around 22 megapixels, a notable step up from the older 1-inch design. A sensor of that size should improve dynamic range, noise performance, and tonal depth, especially in low light. Lens rumours point to a 24–70mm equivalent zoom with a constant f/2 aperture, prioritising light-gathering and consistency over reach.

Optical image stabilisation is expected, while IBIS is unlikely due to size constraints. Autofocus should benefit from Canon’s newer subject-detection systems, including face, eye, animal, and vehicle tracking. Performance-wise, burst rates as high as 30fps via electronic shutter have been mentioned, which would require a fairly fast sensor readout for a compact camera. Video is expected to top out at cropped 4K with 10-bit internal recording. If Canon gets the fundamentals right, the G7 X Mark IV could end up being one of the more capable compact cameras we have seen in years.
