The Micro Four Thirds system is getting a new supporter, something we do not see all that often. While the L-Mount Alliance has regularly made headlines by adding new partners, OM Digital Solutions has now confirmed that Shenzhen Sonida Digital Technology Co., Ltd. will officially support the Micro Four Thirds standard going forward. The Chinese company sells products under its own Songdian name and also works behind the scenes as an ODM manufacturer for other brands, mostly focusing on entry-level gear.
According to OM Digital’s announcement, Sonida plans to release Micro Four Thirds–compliant products, although no concrete specifications or timelines have been shared yet. At the same time, Songdian shared a teaser on social media, hinting that a Songdian-branded Micro Four Thirds camera could already be in development. The post includes the hashtag #m43kamera and suggests the company is still refining the product, even inviting people to share ideas that could influence the final design.
What this likely means in practice is an expansion of the system at the lower end of the market rather than the arrival of a new high-performance body. Songdian’s existing lineup focuses on affordable, beginner-oriented cameras, so expectations should probably be set accordingly. Still, a new manufacturer entering the ecosystem could help broaden accessibility to Micro Four Thirds and of course bring a bit of fresh momentum.
