Halide Camera App Gets New Update

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have been out for a couple of weeks now, and third-party camera apps are starting to make use of their new variable-aperture main camera. One of the first is Halide, which has just released version 3.2 with much more detailed aperture control than Apple provides in its own Camera app. While Apple gives you four aperture presets, Halide lets you choose any value between f/1.48 and f/4, so you can dial in something specific like f/2.1 or f/3.8 instead of being limited to a handful of fixed options.
Alongside that comes a new Aperture Priority mode, which works much like it would on a regular camera. You choose the aperture and Halide automatically handles shutter speed and ISO to get the exposure. Halide 3.2 also adds full manual ISO control, something Apple’s native Camera app still does not offer, and this particular feature is not limited to the iPhone 18 Pro models. So while the variable-aperture controls obviously require Apple’s newest hardware, some of the additional exposure control introduced with this update is available on older supported iPhones as well.
There are also two new Halide Looks called Quicksilver and Dawn. Quicksilver uses higher contrast and heavily muted colours, sitting somewhere between a colour and black-and-white look, while Dawn goes in a warmer direction through the midtones and highlights with slightly cooler, softer shadows. These join the Looks system introduced with Halide 3.0, which applies different colour treatments directly within the app. Halide 3.2 is available now as a free update for existing users. For new users, lifetime access to Halide Mark III costs $69.99, while subscriptions start at $9.99 per year, or $19.99 annually with the additional photography tutorials.
