According to multiple sources cited by FujiRumors, Fujifilm is actively working on a new GFX model built around a massive 180-megapixel sensor. This is not something that is about to drop any time soon, though, it will have a long development timeline, with 2027 looking like the earliest realistic window for any kind of official announcement.

The most interesting story here might just be the sensor itself. The same sources report that Sony is developing a new 180MP medium format sensor, which Fujifilm would almost certainly be using in that camera. What is still unclear is whether it is a partially stacked design. If it is, that would be a meaningful upgrade, helping with readout speed and overall responsiveness, two areas where ultra-high-resolution cameras often fall short. Without something like that, a 180MP GFX body would likely remain a slow, very specialised camera for studio, landscape, or archival work.

Crucially, this does not look like a replacement for Fujifilm’s existing 102MP GFX models. A more realistic scenario is an additional flagship sitting above them, meant for photographers who genuinely need extreme resolution. And while it is easy to question who actually needs 180MP, there are some clear use cases, like aggressive cropping while retaining print-level detail, replacing long lenses with smaller primes and cropping in post, or producing massive exhibition prints. Put another way, a full-frame sensor with the same pixel density would land at around 107 megapixels, which suddenly makes today’s “high-resolution” cameras feel a lot less extreme.
