Just weeks after releasing a major firmware update for the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, Canon has rolled out another update to fix a problem that appeared in the previous release. The new Firmware Version 1.3.1 is a relatively small update, but it addresses an autofocus issue that could cause the camera to stop responding under certain conditions.
The problem surfaced after the release of Firmware Version 1.3.0, which brought a lengthy list of new features to Canon’s flagship hybrid camera. Among the additions were an American Football Action Priority mode, improvements to Registered People Priority tracking, DPRAW support, expanded video monitoring tools, and the ability to save and transfer autofocus settings between cameras. Shortly after release, however, Canon identified a bug where the camera could freeze when using Touch & Drag AF with the AF Area setting set to Whole Area AF.
The new Version 1.3.1 specifically fixes that autofocus problem while retaining all of the features introduced in Version 1.3.0. That means people who held off updating can now install the latest firmware and get everything in one package. Beyond the autofocus improvements, the update added features such as AF for close-up demos in movie mode, an electronic level and grid display during recording, improved HDMI display functionality, the option to assign Airplane Mode to custom buttons, support for up to four custom colour temperature presets, and other small bug fixes.
