A newly discovered Sony camera registration is fuelling speculation about what the company could be planning next. The registration, listed under the model number WW308784, does not reveal any concrete specifications, but one detail has caught people’s attention. Sony apparently classified it as a “Digital Camera” rather than an “Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera.” That distinction is interesting because Sony typically uses the latter designation for its Alpha system cameras, leaving open the possibility that this could be something outside the traditional Alpha lineup.
As a result, speculation has quickly turned toward the possibility of a new fixed-lens camera, with the RX series emerging as one of the leading candidates. Some reports also suggest that an APS-C model cannot be ruled out at this stage. For many photographers, the most exciting possibility would be a long-awaited Sony RX100 VIII. The current RX100 VII has been on the market for several years but remains popular thanks to its compact size, built-in zoom lens, and integrated electronic viewfinder. A modern successor with updated hardware would likely attract plenty of attention.
The timing also fits with comments Sony has made recently regarding the future of the RX lineup. In a recent interview, the company said it still sees demand for the RX100 series and emphasised that RX and ZV cameras serve different audiences. While Sony stopped short of announcing a new RX model, the comments suggested the series has not been abandoned. If an RX100 VIII is indeed in development, many people would likely expect upgrades such as USB-C connectivity, improved autofocus, and a more modern user interface. Interestingly, WW308784 is Sony’s third camera registration to surface within just a few weeks, following two earlier registrations that also sparked speculation about a potential compact camera or APS-C model. For now, though, exactly what camera is hiding behind the new registration remains unknown.
